Police to Resume Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit January 2, 2026

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns and the need to curb crimes facilitated by unauthorised tinted vehicle glasses.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police explained that the decision followed a careful review of prevailing security challenges and the increasing use of vehicles with illegally tinted glasses for criminal activities.

The Force clarified that contrary to public speculation, there has been no court order restraining the police from enforcing existing laws on the use of tinted glass on vehicles. According to the statement, enforcement was earlier suspended purely as a voluntary measure to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.

However, the police noted that recent developments have revealed a disturbing rise in crimes perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. These vehicles, the statement said, have been exploited by criminal elements to conceal their identities while carrying out offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

“In view of this growing threat, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit as a proactive step to safeguard lives and property across the country,” the statement read.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally and in strict compliance with the law, while respecting the fundamental rights of citizens. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, transparency and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to enhance national security.

The police further advised motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through the approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with all legal requirements ahead of the enforcement date.

The statement was dated December 15, 2025, and signed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin on behalf of the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
