Hon. Dasuki Flags Tax Law Discrepancies in National Assembly

Hon. Abdulsamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto) has raised an alarm over alleged significant discrepancies between the tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions subsequently gazetted for public use.

Rising under Order Six, Rule Two of the House Rules during Wednesday’s plenary, Dasuki insisted that his legislative privilege had been breached, arguing that the gazetted documents do not reflect the versions debated and voted upon by lawmakers.

Discrepancies in the Legislative Process
Dasuki informed the House that a careful three-day review of the gazetted copies—obtained from the Ministry of Information—revealed inconsistencies when compared to the Votes and Proceedings and the harmonized versions adopted by both chambers.

“I was here, I gave my vote and it was counted, and I am seeing something completely different,” Dasuki stated, describing the situation as a “serious breach” of the legislative process and the Constitution.

The lawmaker warned that allowing laws to be circulated that differ from those duly passed by the legislature undermines the integrity of the National Assembly.

The Sokoto representative urged the leadership to bring all relevant documents—including the harmonized versions and the gazetted copies—before the Committee of the Whole for immediate scrutiny.

“The whole members should see what is in the gazetted copy and see what they passed on the floor so that we can make the relevant amendment. This is the breach of our laws, and this should not be taken by this honorable House,” he said.
In his response, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, acknowledged the Point of Privilege and assured the lawmaker that the House would take necessary action on the matter.
