How EFCC Operatives Nabbed 5 Herbalists with $3.4m, €280,000 Counterfeit Currency in Osun, Lagos
Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested five suspected herbalists over the possession of counterfeit foreign currencies valued at $3.43 million and €280,000 in Osun and Lagos states.
The suspects were apprehended in connection with the alleged defrauding of a victim, identified as Halima Sanni, of the sum of ₦26.55 million under the guise of providing spiritual solutions.
According to the EFCC, the suspects—Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan (female), and Familola Sunday Olaitan—were arrested on December 7 and 8, 2025, at their respective shrines in Osun and Lagos following sustained surveillance and credible intelligence on their activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate allegedly specialised in defrauding unsuspecting members of the public by claiming to offer spiritual cleansing and remedies for various ailments. The suspects were also said to have convinced victims that they possessed mystical powers to conjure large sums of money, which purportedly required spiritual cleansing by a genie through sacrifices before the cash could be spent.
The EFCC stated that victims were allegedly hypnotised and induced to provide large sums of money to facilitate the supposed spiritual sacrifices.
Items recovered from the suspects include large quantities of counterfeit foreign currencies, two exotic vehicles, and several mobile phones.
The anti-graft agency added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
