YULETIDE: Kogi Police Task Residents to be Vigilant, Partner Security Agencies for Peaceful Celebrations

The Kogi State Police Command has called on residents of the state to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and crime-free Christmas and New Year celebration.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, made the appeal in a statement issued on Friday as part of efforts to strengthen security during the Yuletide season.

According to the CP, the festive period should not be an excuse for actions capable of undermining peace and public safety in the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities around homes, businesses, and public places to the nearest police station or through the command’s control room.

CP Kankarofi also warned against involvement in illegal gatherings, cult-related activities, or reckless behaviour, stressing that such acts would not be tolerated under the guise of celebration.

The police boss further advised motorists and travelers to exercise caution on the roads, urging them to drive responsibly, ensure their vehicles are in good condition, obey traffic rules, and avoid picking up strangers. He also emphasized the need for travelers to inform family members of their routes and remain watchful of pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly.

In addition, the Commissioner encouraged communities to activate neighbourhood watch mechanisms and work closely with community leaders and members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to enhance joint vigilance. Residents were also advised not to leave their homes unattended, install security lights, and inform neighbours whenever they plan to travel.

CP Kankarofi commended the people of Kogi State for their resilience and law-abiding nature, noting that collective responsibility and timely sharing of information with the police would help prevent crimes during the festive season.

“With these simple precautions, we will safeguard our families, markets, churches, and roads. Information from citizens helps us prevent crimes. We are stronger when communities and police unite,” the CP said.

He assured residents of the command’s readiness to maintain peace and security before, during, and after the festivities, urging them to immediately contact the nearest police station if they notice anything suspicious.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Kogi State Police Command, CSP William Ovye Aya, and dated December 20, 2025.
