Kano Gov’t Commissions Neighbourhood Watch Corps, Deploys 2,000 Operatives, Security Vehicles

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps, deploying 2,000 trained operatives across the state as part of renewed efforts to strengthen grassroots security and intelligence gathering.

The commissioning ceremony, which featured a colourful passing-out parade, was held on Tuesday at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the newly established corps will be deployed across the 44 local government areas of the state. The operatives comprise 1,870 males and 130 females, carefully selected to complement existing security structures at the community level.

Governor Yusuf said the Neighbourhood Watch Corps was established to confront rising criminal activities such as banditry, drug abuse, thuggery, and other threats to public safety in both urban and rural areas of Kano State.

To ensure operational efficiency, the governor also rolled out 88 Hilux operational vehicles and 440 motorcycles to enhance patrols, rapid response, and effective coverage across the state.

Addressing the operatives, Governor Yusuf urged them to remain disciplined, honest, and dedicated to duty, stressing that their primary responsibility is to serve and protect their immediate communities.

He reaffirmed that security remains a top priority of his administration, noting that peace and stability are essential for economic growth, educational advancement, and overall social development in Kano State.

The governor further assured that his administration would continue to invest in security infrastructure, personnel welfare, and strategic collaboration with conventional security agencies to ensure a safer and more secure state.

In his remarks, Katsina State Governor, Malam Umar Dikko Radda, commended the initiative, describing it as a proactive step towards tackling insecurity at the grassroots. He pledged Katsina State’s readiness to collaborate with Kano, particularly in addressing criminal activities along border communities affected by cross-border crimes.

Governor Radda emphasized that sustained inter-state cooperation is critical to curbing insecurity in the North-West and achieving lasting peace in the region.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; the deputy governors of Zamfara, Jigawa, and Sokoto states; the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sunusi II; and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi.

Also in attendance were top government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and other stakeholders from within and outside Kano State.
