New Tax Laws Implementation Begins January 1, Tinubu Assures

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws will take effect as scheduled on January 1, 2026, dismissing speculations that the Federal Government may suspend or alter their implementation.

In a State House press statement issued on Tuesday, the President said the tax reforms, including those that became effective on June 26, 2025, as well as the remaining acts billed to commence in the new year, would proceed as planned.

According to Tinubu, the reforms represent a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to establish a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal framework capable of strengthening Nigeria’s economy and social contract.

“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract,” the President stated.

He urged all stakeholders to rally behind the implementation phase of the reforms, noting that the process has now entered a critical delivery stage.

The President also addressed public debates and concerns surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws, stressing that no substantial issues have been identified that would justify halting or disrupting the reform process.

“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” he said.

Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of laws duly passed and enacted, assuring Nigerians that the Presidency would continue to engage the National Assembly to promptly resolve any issues that may arise during implementation.

He further pledged that the Federal Government would consistently act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that promotes prosperity, fairness, and shared responsibility among citizens.

The statement was signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and dated December 30, 2025.
