BUK Class ’92 Marks 33rd Anniversary with its Annual ₦5 Million Donation to Indigent Students
The Bayero University Kano (BUK) Class of 1992 has commemorated its 10th reunion and 33rd anniversary with a ₦5 million donation to the university’s Indigent Students’ Account. The gesture was announced during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, on December 31, 2025.
Led by the Forum Chairman, Muhammad Dahiru Sa’ad, the alumni delegation congratulated Professor Musa on his appointment as the 12th substantive Vice Chancellor. The group also praised the university’s recent rise in global and national rankings, noting BUK’s position as the 3rd best university in Nigeria in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The institution also emerged as the best in Northern Nigeria and retained its status as the top university in the country for international outlook.
Sa’ad commended the Vice Chancellor for securing strategic partnerships, including a memorandum of understanding with OPay Digital Services for a ₦60 million scholarship scheme, as well as collaborations with Chinese research institutions aimed at advancing agricultural mechanization.
The Class of ’92 reaffirmed its support for the university’s disciplinary standards and welfare policies, particularly its zero‑tolerance stance on examination malpractice and cultism. The Chairman also applauded the administration’s efforts to mobilize students for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and its policy allowing students unable to pay registration fees to temporarily suspend their studies.
“We are happy to inform this gathering that BUK Class ’92 was able to facilitate payment for some medical students who were among those suspended due to their inability to pay,” Sa’ad said.
The reunion marked a decade of sustained philanthropy by the alumni group. Over the years, the forum has supported healthcare initiatives through medical outreach programs, assisted widows of deceased members and former lecturers, and consistently contributed to the Indigent Students’ Account.

As part of the anniversary activities, the group scheduled a medical outreach at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for January 1, 2026, followed by an awards ceremony where Professor Musa will serve as Special Guest of Honour.
Responding to the delegation, Professor Musa outlined an ambitious plan to position BUK among the top 500 universities globally. He emphasized the importance of alumni partnerships and infrastructural development in achieving this goal, expressing gratitude to the Class of ’92 for their continued support, which he said contributed significantly to his emergence as Vice Chancellor.
He announced progress in the university’s independent power generation efforts, revealing that the Rural Electrification Agency had conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for a 3.5‑megawatt solar plant upgrade, with plans to expand it to six megawatts. He also disclosed that the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria is expected to approve the construction of 500 staff housing units on land already secured by the university.
Professor Musa praised the Class of ’92 for sustaining their 10‑year tradition of donating to the Indigent Students’ Account, describing the latest ₦5 million contribution as timely. He further revealed plans to launch a university‑wide endowment fund in 2026 to bridge funding gaps.
He noted that the University Senate had approved a policy granting automatic suspension of studies to students unable to pay registration fees, preventing them from dropping out. Students, he said, are being encouraged to take up part‑time jobs on campus or seek support from the forthcoming endowment fund.
Reiterating the university’s firm stance on discipline, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the growing misuse of ICT facilities as a new form of examination malpractice and directed the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) to intensify student sensitization on ethical technology use.
“The university management is proud of the Class of 1992. We are committed to strengthening this partnership to enhance the university’s reputation and achieve our strategic objectives,” he said.
The visit ended with Professor Musa commending the group’s planned medical outreach at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, noting that the university identifies with the group’s motto: “We set the pace for others to follow.”
