I’m Ready to Take-up Arms – Colombian President Vows to Defend Nation Amid Trump Threats
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has declared he is prepared to return to armed struggle in defence of his country following escalating threats and insults from former United States President Donald Trump.
Petro, a former guerrilla fighter turned leftist leader, made the statement on Monday in reaction to Trump’s comments and the reported US military operation over the weekend that led to the seizure of Venezuela’s leader.
Writing on X, Petro said he had vowed never to carry weapons again but would do so if Colombia’s sovereignty was threatened.
“I swore not to touch a weapon again… but for the homeland, I will take up arms again,” he stated.

Tensions between the two leaders have intensified in recent months, with Trump repeatedly directing personal insults at Petro. Over the weekend, Trump warned the Colombian president to “watch his ass” and described him as “a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States.”
Petro, Colombia’s first-ever left-wing president, has been outspoken against US foreign policy in Latin America and has condemned military interventions in the region, particularly the latest action involving neighbouring Venezuela.
The remarks have further heightened diplomatic strains in an already volatile region, as international reactions continue to trail the developments in Venezuela and the sharp exchange between Bogotá and Washington.
