Army Chief Meets Etsu of Nupe, Seeks Traditional Guidance, Support on National Security
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday paid a courtesy visit to the Etsu of Nupe, His Royal Highness Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, in Bida, Niger State, where he reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness and sought the monarch’s guidance on addressing prevailing security challenges across the country.
During the visit, Lt. Gen. Shaibu expressed appreciation for the continued support of the Etsu of Nupe and the traditional institution to the Nigerian Army, noting that collaboration with community leaders remains critical to sustaining security efforts nationwide.
The Army Chief disclosed that the Nigerian Army is currently reviewing its deployments across states to identify operational gaps and opportunities for reinforcing troops where necessary. He emphasized that effective security operations depend largely on timely and credible human intelligence, particularly from local communities.
“We are here not only to pay a courtesy visit but also to seek your constant guidance on how best to tackle the security challenges facing the country, especially through collaboration with other security agencies such as the police,” Lt. Gen. Shaibu said.
He noted that the Etsu of Nupe’s vast experience, including involvement in past international missions such as the Liberian operation and the Multinational Joint Task Force, places him in a unique position to offer valuable insights on security policies and strategies at both state and national levels.

Lt. Gen. Shaibu also acknowledged the support of the royal household to troops operating within the area, describing it as instrumental in helping the military navigate the local security environment. He assured the monarch of the Army’s commitment to sustained engagement with traditional rulers and host communities to enhance operational effectiveness.
The COAS further reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to leverage modern technology in addressing the country’s security challenges, in line with ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening operational capacity.
In his response, the Etsu of Nupe commended the Nigerian Army for its dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation. He offered prayers for the leadership and personnel of the Army, asking for divine guidance, strength, and wisdom in the discharge of their duties.
“The history of the Nigerian Army is rich with experience, and we are confident that under your leadership, the Army will continue to excel in its operations both within and outside the country,” the monarch said.
He underscored the importance of adequate logistics, manpower, training, and investment in technology as key pillars for maintaining operational readiness. The Etsu of Nupe also assured the Army of the continued prayers and support of the traditional institution, stressing that strong synergy between security agencies and traditional leaders is vital for national peace and stability.
The monarch further acknowledged the growth of military formations in the region, noting the expansion from battalions to brigades and special forces units, and expressed optimism that continued development would further strengthen security operations in the area.
