NAF Moves to Fast-Track Arrival of 12 US-Built Attack Helicopters
The Nigerian Air Force has moved to accelerate the delivery of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters from the United States, in a fresh push to strengthen its combat capability amid evolving security threats across the country.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led a high-level programme management review meeting with senior United States Government officials and representatives of Bell Textron’s in San Diego, California, from January 5 to 6, 2026.
The engagement focused on shortening delivery timelines and ensuring strict adherence to production schedules for the helicopters.
Speaking during the meeting, Aneke said the acquisition of the AH-1Z platforms was a strategic priority for the Air Force, stressing that the review underscored the NAF’s emphasis on discipline, accountability and results-driven execution. He commended the US Government and Bell Textron for their cooperation, transparency and professionalism throughout the procurement process.

According to him, the helicopters represent more than a hardware upgrade, describing the programme as a testament to the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States. Aneke noted that the collaboration reflected a shared commitment to confronting regional and global security challenges through sustained capability development.
The air chief assured the American partners that the NAF would take all necessary steps to ensure the helicopters are delivered in the shortest possible time, charging the programme team to work proactively and innovatively to meet timelines and budget benchmarks.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the AH-1Z helicopters would significantly boost mission readiness, operational efficiency and the NAF’s ability to deliver precise airpower in support of ground troops.
Aneke added that the advanced capabilities of the helicopters would enhance precision strikes, reduce collateral damage and improve the protection of lives and property in conflict-affected communities, reaffirming the Air Force’s commitment to professionalism, restraint and accountability in its operations.
