
DHQ Hosts Golf Kitty to Honour Fallen Soldiers, Veterans
The Defence Headquarters on Saturday organised a Golf Kitty in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
This, to honour fallen soldiers, wounded personnel and serving officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The event, held at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Yar’Adua Barracks, Asokoro, brought together senior military officers and members of the golfing community in an atmosphere of camaraderie, reflection and sportsmanship.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a solemn national occasion dedicated to recognising the sacrifices of officers and men who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He said the annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the courage, resilience and selflessness of military personnel, both past and present, while reinforcing national appreciation and support for the Armed Forces.
Musa noted that sporting activities such as golf align with the military ethos of physical fitness, mental alertness and operational readiness, adding that the tournament also provided an opportunity to strengthen bonds and promote unity within the Armed Forces community.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his sustained support for the welfare and operational effectiveness of the military, while also appreciating the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff.
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, paid tribute to officers and men of the Armed Forces for their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s peace and security.
Oluyede said the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day offers Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the bravery of fallen heroes and honour those still serving, stressing that national security remains a collective responsibility.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces and called for stronger civil-military cooperation to ensure lasting peace and stability across the country.
Also speaking, the Captain of the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, said hosting the Golf Kitty was a great honour for the club, disclosing that over 100 golfers participated in the tournament.
Highlights of the event included award presentations, prizes for outstanding golfers, presentation of souvenirs and group photographs, marking a successful sporting activity in honour of Nigeria’s fallen and serving heroes.
January 15 is observed annually by the Federal Government to honour members of the Armed Forces, following the recent renaming of the occasion from Armed Forces Remembrance Day to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day to reflect its dual purpose.
