FG Remains Committed to Military Welfare – Defence Minister

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families to enable them effectively carry out their constitutional responsibility of securing the nation.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), made this known on Sunday during an inter-denominational church service held in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

Speaking during the vote of thanks, the Defence Minister acknowledged the sacrifices, resilience and patriotism of serving and retired personnel of the Armed Forces, as well as the families of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of Nigeria.

“We honour with deep reverence the brave men and women who paid the supreme price in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Musa said.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and sustained commitment to improving the welfare and operational capacity of the military. The minister urged Nigerians to support government efforts to overcome the country’s security challenges, including terrorism, kidnapping and banditry.

“We shall overcome these challenges if we work together as a nation,” he assured.

Delivering the sermon at the service, the Most Reverend Uche Okafor of the Presbyterian Church, Abuja, preached from 2 Chronicles 32:5–8 with the theme *“Gratitude, Encouragement and Spiritual Security.”* He praised the Nigerian military for their selfless service and courage, noting that soldiers confront danger when others flee.

“When there is danger, soldiers are sent. When all run away from danger, soldiers confront danger,” he said.

Rev. Okafor urged members of the Armed Forces not to be discouraged, calling on Nigerians to continually encourage and support them. He stressed that the military’s service goes beyond the nation, describing it as service to God and humanity.

He prayed for divine protection and spiritual strength for the troops, encouraging them to remain strong and courageous. The cleric also expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its challenges and cautioned the military to remain neutral, professional and patriotic as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oloyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu; and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Udieandeye. Others included representatives of the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of Air Staff, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the National Assembly, heads of ministries and parastatals, directors in the ministry and members of the media.
