Bandits Kill  7 in Sokoto Attack as 5 Injured in Zamfara IED Blast

At least seven persons were killed and three others abducted in an early morning raid by armed bandits in Kyara village, a remote border community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, while five others sustained serious injuries in a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Thursday.

According to sources, the Kyara attack occurred around 4:00 a.m. in the village near the Niger Republic border, an area with no mobile phone network coverage. The assailants, reportedly in large numbers and armed with sophisticated weapons, opened fire indiscriminately, killing seven residents and injuring two others. Three villagers were also abducted, and an unspecified number of domestic animals were stolen.

Joint security forces were deployed promptly, evacuating the corpses and injured victims for medical treatment and autopsy. Troops have launched a manhunt for the attackers, with efforts focused on rescuing the abducted villagers, recovering rustled livestock, and apprehending the perpetrators. Confidence-building patrols are ongoing in and around Kyara to prevent further attacks.

Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, a suspected IED explosion along the Takalafiya–Gadar Zaima Road in Bukkuyum LGA injured five persons on the same day. The victims were riding a motorcycle when it ran over the explosive device, believed to have been planted by bandits targeting security patrols. The blast severely damaged the motorcycle and left all passengers with serious injuries.

Security operatives immediately closed the road to traffic and urged residents to avoid the area while a safety assessment was conducted. The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital in Gummi, where they are receiving treatment. Movement along the road remains restricted as authorities continue to monitor and clear the area of further threats.

These twin incidents highlight the persistent security challenges in northwest Nigeria, where banditry and attacks on civilians and security personnel remain a significant concern.
