Nigerian Army Dismisses Mutiny Claims Over Salaries
The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over unpaid salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, the Army faulted an online report (Not PRNigeria), saying it was based on anonymous and unverifiable sources and aimed at undermining public confidence and national security.
The Army stated that at no time had there been any threat of mutiny within its ranks, stressing that mutiny is a grave offence under military law and completely alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian soldiers, who remain loyal to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
According to the statement, officers and soldiers are trained to channel grievances through established military procedures rather than public platforms, noting that narratives suggesting otherwise do not reflect the conduct or disposition of personnel of the Nigerian Army.

The Army also clarified that promotion increments are only one component of military remuneration and should not be misrepresented as total earnings. It explained that military pay comprises consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary by deployment, qualification and responsibility.
The Army Spokesperson said the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities, continues to implement structured welfare reforms, including periodic salary reviews, improved operational allowances, better accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families.
She added that the Chief of Army Staff, on assumption of duty, had initiated engagements with appropriate authorities on troop welfare, which are already yielding positive outcomes, while affirming that the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
The Army urged the public to disregard what it described as unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information, reiterating that it remains a cohesive, disciplined and professional force focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations.
