Troops Kill Terrorists, Uncover Mass Graves in Borno’s Timbuktu Triangle
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have killed several terrorists and uncovered mass graves during recent military operations in the Timbuktu Triangle area of Borno State.
The troops, advancing deep into terrorist-held enclaves in Tergejeri, Chilaria and the Ajigin/Abirma axis, engaged fleeing insurgents in multiple firefights, overwhelming them with superior firepower and forcing them to retreat.
According to the military, the operations led to the discovery of mass graves containing an estimated 20 bodies of terrorists believed to have been buried by their colleagues after previous encounters with troops, in an apparent attempt to conceal casualties.

The statement said the offensive was not without losses. On January 20, 2026, while consolidating at a harbour location about six kilometres north of Chilaria, troops intercepted two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs).
“One of the VBIEDs was successfully neutralised, while the second breached the defensive position, affecting some logistics platforms,” the statement said.
It added that some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed in the incident, while others sustained injuries.
The injured personnel were evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital, with Nigerian Air Force platforms providing aerial cover during the evacuation and subsequent engagements.
The military said troops’ morale remained high and operations were ongoing to sustain pressure on fleeing insurgents, dismantle terrorist networks and restore stability in the region.
The statement was signed by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Lt Col Sani Uba.
