Finally, Gov. Yusuf, 44 LG Chairmen, Lawmakers Dump NNPP

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and legal disputes that he said have weakened the party’s cohesion and stability at both state and national levels.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, with the resignation taking effect from January 25, 2026.

In the letter, the governor expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity and support it extended to him throughout his political journey since 2022.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026,” Yusuf said.

He acknowledged the role played by the party’s leadership and members across Kano State in his emergence and tenure, describing their support and goodwill as instrumental to his political engagement within the NNPP.

However, the governor attributed his decision to what he described as persistent internal challenges, leadership disagreements and ongoing legal battles that have continued to unsettle the party’s structure nationwide.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination,” he noted.

Yusuf added that the situation had led to widening divisions and growing disenfranchisement among party members, resulting in what he described as “cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable” and have generated uncertainty within the party at both the state and national levels.

He said his decision followed careful reflection and was guided by what he considered to be the best interest of the people of Kano State.

“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the governor stated.

The governor emphasized that the move was taken in good faith and without bitterness, reaffirming his commitment to peace, unity and the continued progress of the state.

“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” he said.

In a significant political development, the statement revealed that Yusuf’s resignation was accompanied by the defection of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen across the state.

The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who commended the governor for what he described as laudable achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education and economic empowerment.

“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party, though we are trying our best to contain it, but we have no option than to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors of the NNPP,” Zubairu said.

The development is expected to further reshape Kano’s political landscape as the state heads into a period of realignment ahead of future electoral contests.
