Coup Plot: After Investigation, Military to Court-Martial 16 Officers
The Nigerian military has said it will court-martial sixteen of its officers over allegations of plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) disclosed that investigations into the officers’ conduct have been concluded, following their arrest in October 2025 over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.
In a statement on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the investigation was conducted in line with established military procedures and that the report has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority for necessary action.
According to the DHQ, findings from the probe identified some of the officers as having a case to answer, including allegations linked to actions inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards expected of personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The military said the affected officers would be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations, adding that the process would uphold fairness and due process.
“The measures being taken are purely disciplinary and form part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” the statement read.
The DHQ also stressed that the disciplinary process reflects the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority, noting that the military remains focused on its constitutional responsibilities.
It will be recalled that the Defence Headquarters had earlier announced the arrest of sixteen officers in October 2025, a development that attracted public attention at the time. The military had assured Nigerians that the matter would be thoroughly investigated before any further action.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterated that the ongoing court-martial process is aimed at reinforcing internal discipline and safeguarding the integrity of the military institution.
