Nigerian Navy Appoints Captain Folorunsho as New Director of Information

The Nigerian Navy has appointed Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho as its new Director of Naval Information and official spokesperson, following the approval of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

Captain Folorunsho is also an Associate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and has extensive experience in editorial work, having contributed to several military journals and publications across units of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

He formally took over duties on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, succeeding Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been redeployed to a higher strategic appointment as the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, the Navy’s premier operational base.

According to a statement issued by the Naval Headquarters, the appointment is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Navy’s strategic communication architecture and enhance public engagement.

Captain Folorunsho, who was born on December 27, 1979, in Benin City, Edo State, is a highly trained and decorated naval officer with extensive operational, academic and administrative experience. He attended Olua Primary School, Benin City, and Army Command Children School, Zaria, before proceeding to the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, for his secondary education.

He was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1998 as a member of the 50 Regular Course and was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy as a Sub-Lieutenant in September 2003.

The new naval spokesperson holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy and multiple postgraduate degrees, including a Master’s degree in War Studies (Maritime) from the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan; a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Defence Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy; a Master’s degree in Energy Management from the World Maritime University, Malmö, Sweden; and a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College, Rhode Island. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Ethics and Emerging Military Technology from the same institution.

In the course of his career, Captain Folorunsho has attended several local and international professional military courses, including the Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji; the Senior Staff Course at the Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore; the United Nations Staff Officers Course at the SWEDINT Training Centre, Stockholm; and the Higher Defence Management Course at the United States Naval War College in 2023.

Operationally, he has served onboard several Nigerian Navy ships, including NNS ERINOMI, AYAM and BARAMA, and held key appointments in both field operations and strategic command environments. He also served with Operation SAFE HAVEN (now Operation ENDURING PEACE), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, and the Defence Cyber Operations Centre.

Most recently, Captain Folorunsho served as Chief Instructor, Department of Maritime Warfare, at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, before his appointment as Assistant Director Plans/CNS Directive at Naval Headquarters.

Naval authorities noted that his extensive exposure to editorial work, public speaking, protocol management and strategic communication makes him well suited for the role of Director of Naval Information at a time of evolving security narratives.

Captain Folorunsho is a recipient of several awards and decorations, including the Chief of the Naval Staff Award for Best Graduating Student, United Nations Medal, Meritorious Service Star, Forces Service Star, and the Force Commander UNMISS Commendation Award.

He is married to Mrs Olawunmi Folorunsho, and the marriage is blessed with two children.

PRNigeria reports that the appointment underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to professional excellence, operational transparency and effective information management.
