Enugu Police Arrest Notorious IPOB/ESN Militant Behind Patrol Team Attacks
The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended a notorious member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN), following intelligence on his location within the state.
Sources said operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team raided a beer parlour in Akwuke, Awkunanaw, at around 12:45 a.m. on February 3, 2026, acting on credible information regarding the suspect’s presence.

The suspect, identified as Chukwujekwu Ugwu, 26, also known as “Jekwu,” attempted to escape but was intercepted and taken into custody.
Police noted that Ugwu and his cohorts, who remain at large, were involved in attacks on Distress Response Squad (DRS) patrol teams at Ziks Avenue, Uwani, on December 27, 2025, and at Agbani Road on January 15, 2026.
Security sources added that discreet investigations are ongoing to apprehend other gang members still at large and to recover arms seized during previous attacks.
The arrest underscores the state police command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, disrupting criminal networks, and safeguarding residents in Enugu State.
