Army Nabs Suspected Gunrunner, Recovers Six Machine Guns in Taraba
Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested a suspected gunrunner and recovered a cache of weapons during an intelligence-led operation in Taraba State.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Abubakar Ibrahim, was apprehended on February 12, 2026, in Ibi Local Government Area following credible intelligence reports. The troops, deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Wukari, acted swiftly on the information, leading to the successful interception.
According to military sources, Ibrahim, a native of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, was found in possession of six PKT machine guns and two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Other items recovered during the operation included a cash sum of ₦170,000, a Peugeot 504 vehicle, a Q Seven mobile phone, seven bottles and wraps of perfume, and two small containers of Vaseline.
The suspect is currently in military custody and undergoing further investigation.

Military authorities said the operation has once again thwarted attempts by criminal elements to circulate illegal weapons within the state, a development considered critical to ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity and enhance public safety in Taraba and its environs.
The Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response. He urged them to sustain the operational momentum in line with the mandate of the Chief of Army Staff.
Akaliro also appreciated residents for providing timely and credible intelligence that aided the operation’s success, calling on members of the public to remain security conscious and continue supporting security agencies with actionable information.
“The Brigade remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property, and to restore lasting peace and stability across Taraba State,” the commander stated.
The operation underscores ongoing military efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and strengthen security across the North-East region.
