Kano Govt Hails Tinubu, APC Governors for ₦8bn Singer Market Fire Relief
The Kano State Government has expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors under the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) for their combined ₦8 billion intervention to support traders affected by the devastating fire at Singer Market.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 16, 2026, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the financial support as a remarkable demonstration of empathy, national solidarity, and responsive leadership that transcends political divides.
PRNigeria reports that the intervention follows the catastrophic inferno that engulfed a significant portion of Singer Market—Kano’s largest wholesale hub for foodstuffs and essential commodities—on February 10, 2026. The fire, which reportedly broke out in the early hours of the morning, raged for several hours despite coordinated efforts by the Federal and State Fire Services. Hundreds of shops and warehouses were destroyed, with goods and property worth billions of naira reduced to ashes.

Singer Market serves as a critical supply artery for Northern Nigeria and neighbouring Sahelian countries, and the incident sent shockwaves across regional trade networks.
According to the Kano State Government, the financial package comprises ₦5 billion approved by President Tinubu as a direct federal intervention and ₦3 billion contributed by APC governors through the PGF in a show of collective responsibility.
“This timely and compassionate intervention once again demonstrates the President’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, especially in moments of hardship and distress,” Waiya stated.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration has assured traders and stakeholders that the funds will be managed with transparency and accountability. The government said it is working closely with market unions and relevant security agencies to ensure that verified victims of the inferno are the primary beneficiaries of the relief package.
The Commissioner noted that the gesture from APC governors—despite Kano being governed by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)—underscores the spirit of cooperative governance and national unity.
“It sends a clear message that the people of Kano are not alone in their moment of grief and need,” Waiya added, offering prayers for divine reward for the President and the contributing governors, and for protection against future disasters.
