NAF Boosts Pilot Training, Technical Capacity in Czech Republic
The Nigerian Air Force has stepped up its modernisation drive with fresh moves to upgrade pilot training and technical capacity.
This step, following a high-level visit to the Czech Republic by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.
The two-day strategic trip, held from February 23 to 24, focused on strengthening training systems, improving aircraft sustainment and deepening defence cooperation as the Air Force pushes to align with modern warfare demands.
In a statement, during the visit at Aero Vodochody Aerospace, makers of the L-39 series jets, Aneke reaffirmed Nigeria’s partnership with the firm, particularly in the overhaul and upgrade of the L-39ZA Albatros aircraft used for pilot training and light attack roles.
“Our partnership is anchored not only on platforms but on building institutional capacity and technical competence that will endure,” the CAS said.

The visit comes as the NAF prepares to transition from the ageing L-39ZA fleet to the more advanced L-39 Skyfox — a modern jet trainer and light attack aircraft designed for contemporary air operations.
During a tour of the production facility, Aneke stressed the need for a seamless transition that guarantees uninterrupted pilot training output and sustained operational readiness.
The Air Chief also held talks with the Czech Air Force, with both sides exploring expanded cooperation in simulator training, logistics support and rotary- and fixed-wing operations.
Describing the engagement as significant, the Commander of the Czech Air Force said it marked “a meaningful step towards deepening military cooperation and advancing shared professional standards.”
Beyond aircraft upgrades, the NAF delegation examined advanced aviation simulators, parachute training systems and unmanned aerial solutions — technologies seen as critical to strengthening modern air power.
Aneke emphasised that defence partnerships must go beyond equipment acquisition to include technology transfer and knowledge exchange.
“The future of air power lies in innovation, local capacity development, and strategic cooperation. We are focused on partnerships that strengthen our ability to sustain, adapt, and innovate,” he said.
