State Police: IGP Disu Inaugurates Implementation Committee
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state policing and advance his reform-driven vision for the Nigeria Police Force.
The move comes shortly after his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.
According to reports by TVC News, Disu convened his first formal meeting with senior police officers following the unanimous ratification of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council. The endorsement paved the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was named chairman of the eight-member State Police Implementation Committee, tasked with coordinating the framework for decentralised policing.
Addressing the force’s top hierarchy, Disu underscored that leadership is defined by responsibility rather than rank. He called for professionalism, accountability, and discipline across all commands nationwide, stressing that authority must be exercised with restraint and guided by respect for fundamental human rights.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and justice, irrespective of status or background,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to rights-based policing.

The IGP also announced plans to strengthen internal accountability mechanisms within the Force. He directed that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad be empowered to function independently to enhance transparency and restore public confidence.
On the proposed decentralisation of policing, Disu noted that state police would enable sub-national governments to play more active roles in addressing security challenges within their jurisdictions, thereby improving operational responsiveness at the grassroots.
The committee’s inauguration comes at a pivotal moment for the Nigeria Police Force, following a recent leadership transition. President Tinubu had appointed Disu as Acting IGP on February 24, 2026, after the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun. His appointment was subsequently endorsed by the Nigeria Police Council.
Disu is expected to be formally sworn in as substantive Inspector-General during the Federal Executive Council meeting.
His assumption of office coincides with heightened security concerns across the country, including increasing incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and communal violence. The state police initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader security sector reforms aimed at strengthening law enforcement and improving response capacity nationwide.
