FG Reiterates Commitment to Responsible Use of Nuclear Technology
Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the peaceful application of nuclear energy as part of efforts to promote national development and strengthen its role in global nuclear governance.
This position was reaffirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, during a meeting with the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Anthony Inalegwu G. Ekedegwa, on Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both officials to review Nigeria’s participation in global nuclear governance and explore areas of closer collaboration between the Ministry and the Commission, particularly in advancing the peaceful use of nuclear technology for national development.
Speaking during the engagement, Tuggar emphasised the strategic relevance of atomic energy and nuclear technology in contemporary international relations, noting that nuclear issues remain central to global discussions on energy security, technological advancement, and international peace and stability.

The minister also stressed the importance of strengthening institutional collaboration between the Ministry and NAEC to enhance Nigeria’s influence in international nuclear diplomacy, particularly within the United Nations system and other related multilateral platforms.
According to him, Nigeria has consistently supported the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology as a tool for socio-economic development, and such cooperation remains essential in advancing the country’s strategic interests in the global nuclear space.
Earlier in his remarks, Ekedegwa thanked the minister for granting the audience and briefed him on the ongoing activities and priorities of the Commission.
He also highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s continued engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other relevant international institutions involved in nuclear governance and cooperation.
The meeting underscored Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships that support the responsible and peaceful use of nuclear technology for development purposes.
