Troops Repel Coordinated ISWAP Attacks on 5 Locations in Borno
Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation Hadin Kai have successfully foiled multiple coordinated attacks launched by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists on several military locations across Borno State.
The attacks, which occurred between the night of Sunday, March 8 and early hours of Monday, March 9, 2026, targeted troop positions in Delwa, Goniri, Kukawa, Mainok, and a troops’ harbour position deep within the Sambisa Forest.
According to the military, the terrorists launched the assaults simultaneously from multiple directions in what appeared to be a calculated attempt to overwhelm the troop formations.
However, troops reportedly stood their ground and mounted a determined defence despite the intensity of the attacks and the heavy firepower deployed by the insurgents.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Sani Uba, the troops fought across several fronts while effectively coordinating their defensive actions.
Reinforcements and the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai provided timely support during the engagements, forcing the attackers to retreat after sustaining significant casualties.
“Several terrorist bodies were left behind on the battlefield as the insurgents fled,” the statement said.

Troops also recovered a cache of weapons and equipment abandoned during the terrorists’ withdrawal. The recovered items include two PKT machine guns, six AK-47 rifles, eight rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) bombs, four mortar bombs, and assorted ammunition of various calibres.
The military noted that parts of the defensive perimeters at Goniri and Kukawa were briefly breached during the fierce fighting, while some structures and vehicles within the bases were damaged due to the intensity of the firefights.
Despite the damage, the military confirmed that all the locations remain firmly under the control of Operation Hadin Kai troops.
Ground forces, backed by air support, are currently conducting follow-up exploitation operations in the affected areas, while cordon-and-search operations are ongoing in nearby communities where some wounded terrorists were reportedly seeking refuge.
The military, however, confirmed that the engagements resulted in the loss of some soldiers, including an officer described as outstanding who died in Kukawa while defending the country.
The statement said the fallen soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of Nigeria and the protection of innocent citizens, adding that their courage would continue to inspire troops in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Operation Hadin Kai reaffirmed that its troops remain vigilant, motivated, and committed to sustaining relentless operations aimed at denying terrorists freedom of action and restoring lasting peace and stability across Nigeria’s North East region.
