In Kano, Army, DSS Intercept Gunrunner with 884 Rounds of Ammunition
Troops of the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested a suspected gunrunner in Kano State while transporting a large cache of ammunition allegedly intended for bandit groups in Zamfara State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspect, a female courier, was apprehended at approximately 3:00 a.m. on March 14 following credible intelligence on the movement of illegal arms through Kano.
The sources confirmed that the suspect was intercepted while conveying 884 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from Plateau State to Zamfara State. At the time of her arrest, she was reportedly travelling with her 10-year-old daughter.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been contracted by criminal elements to transport the ammunition to Zamfara State, a region that has been heavily affected by banditry and armed violence. She allegedly confessed to receiving an advance payment of ₦50,000 for the delivery, with further payment expected upon successful completion of the task.
Security officials further disclosed that the suspect admitted to having carried out similar assignments on two previous occasions, highlighting the use of civilian couriers in the illicit arms trade across Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions.
A security source noted, “The suspect was intercepted following actionable intelligence regarding the movement of ammunition through Kano. A total of 884 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were recovered during the operation.”
The arrest underscores the role of major transit hubs such as Kano in enabling the supply of ammunition to armed bandit groups operating in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and neighbouring states.
The suspect, along with the recovered ammunition, has been handed over to the DSS for further investigation and possible prosecution. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider network behind the illegal arms supply chain and identify other collaborators involved in the trafficking operation.
