Army Chief Hosts Soldiers to Interfaith Breaking of Fast in Abuja
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has commended officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their bravery and resilience in ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency and banditry across the country.
Shaibu gave the commendation on Saturday while hosting soldiers serving within the Federal Capital Territory to a combined interfaith breaking of fast in Abuja.
The event, brought together Christian and Muslim personnel for a joint breaking of fast as part of efforts to promote unity and camaraderie among troops.
Addressing the soldiers, the Army Chief paid tribute to troops deployed in various operational theatres across the country, particularly in the North-East, North-West and North-Central regions, for their sacrifices and unwavering commitment to defending the nation.
He noted that the simultaneous observance of the Muslim fasting period of Ramadan and the Christian season of Lent carries profound spiritual lessons that align with the values expected of soldiers.
According to him, the sacred seasons highlight virtues such as sacrifice, patience, discipline and compassion—qualities that resonate strongly with the professional ethos of the Nigerian soldier.
Shaibu acknowledged that many troops observing these religious obligations continue to perform their duties under difficult operational conditions, describing their commitment as a demonstration of exceptional dedication and patriotism.
He stressed the importance of leadership by example and effective administration as key elements of his command philosophy, noting that the welfare of soldiers and their families remains a top priority of his leadership.

The Army Chief urged personnel not to lose sight of the bonds of comradeship and the warrior ethos that define the Nigerian Army as a professional fighting force.
He also encouraged soldiers to support one another, remain steadfast in the face of prevailing security challenges and remember the sacrifices of fallen colleagues who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
Shaibu reiterated his vision to transform the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable and combat-ready force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency operational environment.
He added that strengthening training standards, discipline and operational readiness would remain critical to achieving sustained success in ongoing military operations.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Administration (Army), Isa Abdullahi, described the gathering as a symbol of unity, mutual respect and shared purpose among soldiers of different faiths serving under one national flag.
He said the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent reflects enduring values such as sacrifice, discipline, reflection and compassion—principles that closely align with the demands of military service.
Abdullahi noted that the interfaith breaking of fast goes beyond ceremony, as it reinforces fellowship and solidarity among soldiers irrespective of religious background.
He also commended troops deployed across various operational theatres for their vigilance, sacrifice and dedication, saying their commitment embodies the spirit of endurance and selfless service required in both military duty and spiritual devotion.
