Saudi Arabia Announces March 18 for Sighting of Shawwal Crescent to Conclude Ramadan Fasting
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has called on Muslims across the Kingdom to observe the sky for the crescent moon that will mark the beginning of Shawwal 1447 AH on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
In an official statement issued on Monday, March 16, the court urged citizens and residents to sight the crescent on the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan and report any confirmed observation to the appropriate authorities.

The court advised that anyone who sights the crescent—either with the naked eye or with the aid of binoculars—should promptly report to the nearest court to formally record their testimony. Those unable to access a court were encouraged to contact the nearest designated centre to relay the information to judicial authorities.
Saudi Arabia traditionally relies on the physical sighting of the moon to determine the end of Ramadan, with the Islamic lunar month lasting either 29 or 30 days depending on the visibility of the crescent.
According to the court, if the Shawwal crescent is sighted on the evening of March 18, Ramadan will conclude after 29 days and Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Thursday, March 19, 2026. However, if the crescent is not sighted, Ramadan will complete 30 days, and Eid al-Fitr will be observed on Friday, March 20, 2026.
The Supreme Court is expected to make a final announcement on the start of Shawwal later on the night of March 18 after reviewing moon sighting reports from across the Kingdom.
