IGP Disu Disburses ₦2.4bn to Families of Fallen Officers, Moves to Reform Police Welfare System
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday presented cheques totalling over ₦2.4 billion to 1,075 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to personnel welfare.
The disbursement, carried out under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, took place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The total sum of ₦2,435,421,584.11 covers multiple policy years, including 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026, as well as outstanding insurance claims recovered from previous years.
Speaking at the event, the Force Insurance Officer, Lydia Ameh, said the disbursement reflects the resolve of the IGP to prioritise the welfare of officers and their families. She explained that the payments were largely the result of efforts to recover long-standing insurance obligations, noting that decisive measures had been taken to compel compliance from insurance providers and eliminate delays in claims settlement.

Ameh further assured that the Force Insurance Unit remains committed to transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery in managing welfare-related processes.
In his remarks, IGP Disu described the ceremony as a solemn acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by officers who died in the line of duty. He stressed that the initiative goes beyond financial assistance, representing the Nigeria Police Force’s enduring responsibility to honour fallen personnel and support their families.
The police chief also pledged to strengthen welfare frameworks within the Force, improve administrative efficiency, and eliminate bottlenecks in the processing and disbursement of benefits. He added that modern technology would be deployed to enhance transparency and streamline claims management.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its personnel, emphasising that the sacrifices of fallen officers remain critical to national peace, security, and stability.
