DIA to Leverage Technology for Smarter Intelligence Operations — FG
The Federal Government has urged the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to intensify the deployment of advanced technology to enhance intelligence gathering and improve national security operations across the country.
The call was made by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, during a familiarisation visit to the leadership of the DIA in Abuja on Wednesday.
Pheelangwah said the evolving nature of security threats, including terrorism, banditry and cybercrime, requires intelligence agencies to adopt cutting-edge technologies to remain ahead of adversaries.
He noted that the role of the DIA in intelligence gathering, analysis and interagency coordination has been critical to recent operational successes recorded by the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
He commended the professionalism and dedication of personnel of the agency, stressing that their contributions have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and internal security architecture.
The Permanent Secretary emphasised that continuous investment in technology, training and personnel welfare would be key to sustaining the agency’s operational effectiveness.
“DIA must continually adapt cutting-edge technologies to meet emerging threats and maintain operational relevance in a rapidly evolving security environment,” he said.
He also underscored the importance of well-trained and motivated personnel, noting that improved welfare and capacity building would boost morale and enhance productivity within the agency.

In his response, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye, said the agency remains committed to proactive intelligence operations aimed at preventing and neutralising threats before they materialise.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration among security agencies, describing intelligence sharing and coordination as vital tools in tackling complex security challenges.
According to him, the agency has made significant progress in strengthening its operational capacity through the integration of human intelligence, technical capabilities and strategic partnerships.
Undiandeye disclosed that over 1,300 personnel have been trained in intelligence and related fields, while the adoption of modern technology has improved the agency’s ability to deliver timely and precise intelligence.
He noted that the agency’s proactive approach has contributed to reduced incidents of unintended targeting and civilian harm in recent operations.
Despite the progress, the intelligence chief identified key challenges, including limited operational capacity, equipment shortages and funding constraints, which he said could hinder optimal performance.
He, however, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its continued support and appealed for increased funding, timely release of operational resources and acquisition of modern platforms to strengthen intelligence operations.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for both parties to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening collaboration and enhancing Nigeria’s intelligence framework in response to evolving security threats.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the DIA were present at the engagement.
