APC Chairman Woos Shekarau in Kano, Seeks Northern Unity Ahead of 2027
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has stepped up efforts to consolidate the party’s influence in Northern Nigeria with a strategic visit to former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.
Yilwatda led a high-level delegation, including Senator Hayatu Gwarzo, to Shekarau’s residence in Mundubawa, Kano, in what party sources described as part of broader consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the visit, the APC chairman described Shekarau as “a sincere man and a decent politician,” whose experience and national reach remain valuable to Nigeria’s political landscape.
He said the visit was both a demonstration of personal respect and a strategic move to engage key northern leaders at a critical time.
According to him, Northern Nigeria is at a decisive moment that requires unity, collaboration, and strategic alignment among stakeholders to ensure stability and progress.
Reflecting on political developments, Yilwatda recalled the North’s support for the completion of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, stressing that the same principle of fairness should be upheld for the South under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“I am a northerner, and I will not allow anything that will sabotage the North,” he stated.

The APC chairman also highlighted ongoing federal projects as evidence of the administration’s commitment to the region, citing the gas pipeline network and the Lagos–Kano–Maradi rail line as key infrastructure initiatives expected to boost economic activities.
He described Kano as a major commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa, noting that the completion of such projects would further enhance its economic relevance.
Yilwatda appealed to Shekarau to join the APC, describing him as a pillar of Nigerian politics whose leadership would strengthen the party’s electoral prospects.
“We are here to plead with you to join APC. We need your experience and leadership to move the party and the nation forward, irrespective of ethnic or religious differences,” he said.
He added that Kano currently benefits from significant federal appointments and assured that the administration remains committed to further development in the state.
Responding, Shekarau expressed appreciation for what he described as a “brotherly visit,” noting that he was honoured by the delegation’s gesture.
However, the former governor disclosed that his current party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing serious internal challenges.
He described the situation as a “serious cancer,” adding that efforts are ongoing within the party to resolve the crisis.
Shekarau said he is consulting widely with stakeholders, including his Shura Council, before making any political decision.
“In the next couple of days, I will make my position known after thorough consultation,” he said.
Political analysts say the visit underscores intensifying realignments and consultations within Nigeria’s political landscape as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 elections.
