Army Debunks ‘Misleading Narratives’ on Soldier’s Death in Katsina
The has dismissed circulating media reports surrounding the death of Corporal Ude Jude, describing them as misleading, inaccurate, and deliberately distorted.
In a statement issued on April 12, 2026, the Headquarters 17 Brigade clarified that contrary to claims in some media outlets, including Vanguard Newspaper and News Express Nigeria, the deceased was not a Lieutenant but Corporal Ude Jude, a member of the 67 Regular Recruit Intake enlisted in 2012. He hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The Army explained that the incident leading to his death did not occur within the barracks, as widely speculated. Instead, Corporal Ude sustained injuries on February 16, 2026, while deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua, Katsina State. According to official records, he had left his duty post around 8:30 p.m. to purchase personal items when he reported being attacked by unknown assailants.
However, preliminary investigations indicate that the injuries may have resulted from a physical altercation with a civilian over a personal dispute. The attackers reportedly fled the scene before the soldier received assistance from local residents and subsequently reported the incident at the Medical Reception Station.
The Army noted that Corporal Ude was immediately treated and evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he remained under close medical supervision. Medical reports confirmed he suffered stab wounds and other trauma consistent with a violent encounter, requiring prolonged care.

On March 24, 2026, after receiving treatment, the soldier returned to his residence within the barracks but later collapsed outside his home. He was rushed back to the Medical Centre, where he was confirmed dead on arrival despite emergency efforts.
Refuting allegations of negligence, the Brigade stated that all necessary medical and welfare support was provided. It added that the Garrison Commander personally facilitated post-death arrangements, including the provision of a coffin and mortuary services.
The Army further disclosed that it coordinated with the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu, which provided additional support, including security during the burial. All military honours and personal effects were duly handed over to the next of kin, while the family was formally notified in accordance with standard procedures.
According to the statement, the delay in public clarification was to allow for thorough verification of facts, including medical, operational, and eyewitness accounts, to avoid releasing incomplete or inaccurate information.
The Army emphasized that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, assuring that justice will be pursued in line with due process.
It also dismissed claims of internal sabotage or orchestrated violence within the barracks as baseless and unsupported by evidence, urging the public to disregard such narratives.
While expressing regret over the loss, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to personnel welfare and professional standards, calling on the public to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims.
