After Slamming Pope Leo, Trump Shares AI Image Portraying Himself as Jesus Christ
U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his public dispute with Pope Leo XIV, combining sharp political criticism with a provocative social media post featuring artificial intelligence-generated imagery.
The latest episode unfolded Sunday night when Trump openly criticised the Pope’s leadership, describing him as ineffective and accusing him of aligning with liberal political positions. He argued that the pontiff should refrain from commenting on geopolitical matters—particularly those involving the United States—and instead concentrate on spiritual responsibilities.
Shortly after issuing these remarks, Trump shared a digitally created image depicting himself in a Christ-like role. The AI-generated visual shows him dressed in flowing robes, appearing to perform a biblical-style healing, with light emanating from his hands as observers look on. The imagery closely mirrors traditional depictions of Jesus Christ, including references to miracle narratives such as the raising of Lazarus.

The post incorporated a blend of religious and patriotic symbolism, featuring American flags, military aircraft, soaring eagles and angelic figures, reinforcing a fusion of spiritual and national imagery. The timing of the post—coming within hours of Trump’s criticism of the Pope—drew widespread attention and debate.
This is not the first instance of Trump employing AI-generated religious imagery. In May 2025, he shared an image of himself dressed in papal attire following remarks that he would consider becoming pope, a move that similarly generated significant public reaction.
The dispute follows recent comments by Pope Leo XIV, who warned against what he described as a “delusion of omnipotence” fuelling global conflicts, including tensions involving the United States and Iran. Trump responded by labelling the Pope “weak on crime” and criticising his stance on foreign policy, particularly suggestions perceived as conciliatory towards adversaries.
Trump further questioned the Pope’s political judgement and reiterated his position that religious authorities should not interfere in decisions made by elected governments.
