Kano Police Arrest 2 Fraudsters, Recover 28 SIM Cards
The Kano State Police Command has dismantled a fraud syndicate that allegedly impersonated spirits, locally referred to as “Aljannu,” to deceive and extort unsuspecting members of the public via telephone calls.
The suspects, Ahmad Ibrahim, 24, and Isma’il Muhammad, 22, both residents of Dandinshe Quarters in Dala Local Government Area, were arrested on April 10, 2026, following credible intelligence on their activities. Operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad carried out the operation.
According to the police, the duo used multiple GSM lines and voice modulation techniques to disguise their identities, posing as supernatural entities during calls to victims. They reportedly instructed victims to recite incantations while issuing threats of impending misfortune if they failed to comply, thereby instilling fear and coercing them into parting with money and other valuables.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the scheme, claiming to have defrauded more than 500 victims through the method. A total of 28 SIM cards believed to have been used in perpetrating the crime were recovered from them.
