Troops Dismantle IPOB/ESN Camps in Enugu, Recover IED, ₦2m Ransom Proceeds
Troops of the Nigerian Army have intensified offensive operations against suspected IPOB/ESN elements in the South-East, recording significant gains with the destruction of strongholds, recovery of explosive devices, and interception of ransom funds linked to kidnapping activities.
The military disclosed that on April 14, 2026, joint forces under Operation Eastern Sanity, in collaboration with the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, carried out a coordinated strike on insurgent positions in Ajali Forest, located in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to the Army, the operation forced the armed group into a disorganized retreat, leading to the abandonment of key assets, including an anti-tank Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The device was subsequently secured and neutralized by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, preventing potential casualties.

Following the assault, troops established control over the area and commenced sustained clearance operations aimed at dismantling remaining infrastructure. Military engineers reportedly destroyed several hideouts using heavy equipment, leaving the fleeing elements without cover or the capacity to regroup.
In a separate but related operation on the same day, troops of the 82 Division Garrison deployed in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, acting on intelligence provided by the Department of State Services (DSS), intercepted funds suspected to be ransom proceeds from kidnapping activities.
The operation led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper described as notorious by security sources. A search of the suspect’s residence yielded a pump-action rifle and a sum of ₦2 million believed to be ransom money.
Military authorities confirmed that the suspect, along with the recovered items, has been handed over to relevant agencies for further investigation and efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
The Army stated that the combined operations have further weakened the operational and financial capabilities of the group, noting that sustained military pressure continues to erode their cohesion and effectiveness.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Army assured residents of the South-East of continued efforts to eliminate criminal elements and restore lasting peace, while urging the public to support ongoing security operations through credible information sharing.
