Anti-Kidnapping Unit Foils Midnight Attack on Sokoto Communities

Security operatives in Sokoto State have successfully foiled a coordinated attack by armed bandits on Illela Village in Achida Town and Kwargaba Hamlet, neutralising one assailant during a fierce gun battle.

The operation, led by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in collaboration with other tactical teams, followed a distress call received at about 12:30 a.m. on April 23, 2026, reporting simultaneous attacks on the two communities.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, personnel who were already on high alert swiftly mobilised to the affected areas.

Gun Battle with Bandits

On arrival, the operatives reportedly came under heavy gunfire from the attackers, leading to a prolonged exchange.

“The operatives overpowered the assailants after several minutes of intense gun duel. One bandit, dressed in military uniform, was neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds into the nearby Gundumi Forest,” the statement said.

Casualty Recorded

However, the police confirmed that a member of the local vigilante group in Kwargaba was killed by the bandits before security forces arrived.

His body has since been recovered and handed over to his family for burial.

Manhunt Ongoing

Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with operatives currently combing the Gundumi Forest and surrounding areas to track down the wounded bandits.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security post.

The latest incident underscores ongoing efforts by security forces to curb banditry and protect communities across Sokoto State.
