Troops Adopt New Offensive Tactics, Neutralise Terrorists, Recover Rustled Livestock in Katsina
Nigerian troops under Sector 2 of Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA have intensified a new wave of coordinated tactical offensives against terrorists and criminal networks in Katsina State, recording major successes across Matazu, Musawa, Kankia, Dutsin-Ma and Malumfashi Local Government Areas.
The latest operations, conducted on May 9, 2026, reflect a shift toward intelligence-driven ambushes, simultaneous clearance missions and inter-agency collaboration aimed at disrupting terrorist movement, dismantling hideouts and cutting off criminal support networks in the North-West.
Military authorities said the operations were launched following credible intelligence indicating that terrorists fleeing sustained bombardments and ground assaults in Dikawa were attempting to regroup and escape through strategic corridors in Katsina communities.
According to a statement signed by the Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, troops of the 171 Battalion stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FUDMA executed a successful ambush along the Matazu–Dutsin-Ma axis.
The troops reportedly engaged the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gun battle, neutralising several of them and recovering weapons and combat items abandoned during the encounter.
Recovered items included AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a motorcycle, cutlasses and assorted charms believed to have been used by the terrorists.
Security analysts say the ambush operation demonstrates an evolving military strategy focused on intercepting terrorists during retreat phases, rather than allowing them opportunities to reorganise in remote enclaves.
In another coordinated offensive, troops simultaneously launched clearance operations targeting identified terrorist hideouts in Matazu, Musawa and Kankia Local Government Areas.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Katsina State Community Watch Corps, led to the successful dislodgement of terrorists from enclaves located in Torcachi, Giginya and Tashar Ganji villages.

According to the military, the sustained pressure forced the terrorists to abandon their camps and flee the areas.
Troops subsequently recovered 175 rustled livestock believed to have been stolen from local communities during previous attacks.
The recovered animals are currently in military custody pending their handover to the appropriate authorities in Matazu Local Government Area.
Observers note that the integration of community-based security structures into military operations is increasingly becoming a critical component of counter-banditry efforts in the North-West, particularly in intelligence gathering and terrain familiarity.
In a separate operation highlighting growing synergy between security agencies, troops of FOB Malumfashi partnered with operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to conduct a targeted raid on suspected drug trafficking networks in Kauyan Dawo area of Malumfashi LGA.
The joint operation resulted in the arrest of six suspected drug dealers identified as Sani Rabiu, Umar Nasiru, Abulkubus Aminu, Abdullahi Halilu, Abubakar Rabiu and Abubakar Dahiru.
Security operatives recovered various illicit substances, including 82.5 grams of suspected Cannabis Sativa, 15.7 grams of Exol-5 and 1.8 grams of D5.
The suspects and recovered narcotics have since been transferred to the NDLEA Malumfashi Area Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Military authorities reiterated that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to sustaining aggressive operations against terrorists, bandits and criminal syndicates across the North-West theatre.
“The Theatre Command remains resolute in its commitment to aggressive operations against all threats to peace and security within the Joint Operations Area,” Lieutenant Colonel Danja stated.
He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence capable of enhancing ongoing operations.
The latest successes come amid renewed military offensives across several states in the North-West, where security forces have increasingly adopted proactive strategies involving precision intelligence, rapid-response ambushes, coordinated raids and stronger collaboration with local security structures and law enforcement agencies.
