NUJ Honours AIG Moshood Jimoh as Crime Fighter of the Year
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has honoured the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Moshood Olohundare Jimoh, with the Crime Fighter of the Year award in recognition of his intelligence-led policing strategy and contributions to crime reduction in Lagos and Ogun states.
The honour was conferred during the Annual Press Week of the NUJ Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council which was graced by the President NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdul and the immediate past President, Chief Chris Isiguzo in Abuja.
The award is coming few months after AIG Jimoh was named the 2025 Security Officer of the Year at the Security and Emergency Management Awards (SAEMA), further underscoring growing recognition of his policing approach focused on intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, and rapid-response security interventions.
Jimoh, who previously served as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State before his elevation as AIG overseeing Lagos and Ogun states, was recognised for spearheading operations that targeted violent crimes and strengthened community-oriented policing across the region.
The event also featured the conferment of the position of NUJ Patron on former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro.
Other distinguished award recipients included the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Editor-in-Chief of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, Azu Ishiekwene; ARISE TV journalist, Sumner Sambo; and Uyi Amadi of Central TV, among others.
Speaking on behalf of the award recipients, AIG Jimoh described journalists as critical partners in nation-building, security management and public accountability.
“The media remains the mirror that reflects our activities. Journalists are not enemies when they publish critical reports. Constructive criticism often serves as a wake-up call for institutions and public officers,” he said.
Jimoh, who also served as Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT and later as Force Public Relations Officer, noted that his longstanding relationship with the NUJ FCT Council significantly shaped his career in policing and public communication.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to community-oriented and people-centred policing.
The senior police officer also commended the NUJ FCT Council for what he described as its patriotism, professionalism and sustained support for the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, the police will continue to rely on the media as a strategic bridge between law enforcement agencies and the public in promoting effective policing and public trust.
Earlier in her remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Ms. Grace Ike, stressed the need for responsible journalism and stronger collaboration among media stakeholders to combat disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She described the award recipients as distinguished professionals whose dedication to truth, excellence and public service continues to strengthen confidence in institutions and democratic governance.
Delivering the keynote address, former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, who spoke on the theme “Defending Democracy in an Era of Disinformation,” warned that fake news, propaganda and manipulated narratives pose serious threats to national unity and democratic stability.
In his goodwill message, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, urged journalists to embrace factual, balanced and conflict-sensitive reporting.
Represented by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Chief noted that responsible journalism remains vital in countering insecurity and depriving terrorists and criminal groups of publicity advantages.
“The media remains a critical pillar of our democracy and a vital instrument for national cohesion, public enlightenment and accountability,” Oluyede stated.
Also speaking, Chairman of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, Mrs. Zainab Nda-Isaiah, praised Nigerian journalists for their resilience, courage and professionalism despite operating in difficult and often hostile environments.
She described the media as indispensable to the sustenance of democracy and the promotion of good governance in Nigeria.
