Askira Assumes Office as NBA Garki Chairman, Unveils Reform Agenda
A new leadership has taken over the affairs of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Garki Branch, following the inauguration of newly elected executive officers led by Barrister Alkali Adamu Askira as Chairman.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the branch secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory, marked the commencement of a new two-year administration for one of Abuja’s most prominent NBA branches, which comprises hundreds of legal practitioners.
In his inaugural address, Askira described his election as a demonstration of the confidence and trust reposed in him and his team by members of the branch, pledging to provide purposeful and inclusive leadership.
“I do not see this mandate as a mere formality. I see it as a demonstration of confidence from members, and I will not take that trust for granted,” he said.
The new chairman outlined his administration’s vision, anchored on the principles of professionalism, unity, and progress, which he said would guide efforts to strengthen the branch, deepen members’ engagement, and enhance the welfare and professional development of lawyers.
According to him, the new executive council is committed to fostering greater cohesion within the branch while advancing the interests of members and reinforcing the NBA’s role in promoting justice and the rule of law.
Askira called on members to support the new leadership and work collectively toward achieving the branch’s goals.

“Together, we will achieve greatness. I thank you for the confidence you have placed in me and my team. We shall work tirelessly to justify your trust and further strengthen the branch,” he stated.
As part of measures to ensure a seamless transition, the chairman directed all outgoing committee chairpersons and secretaries to complete the handover of responsibilities and relevant documents to the new executive council within seven days.
He noted that the directive was necessary to promote continuity, accountability, and effective administration.
In a move aimed at broadening participation and improving governance within the branch, Askira announced plans to establish three new committees, namely the Welfare Committee, Advisory Committee, and General Council of Elders.
He explained that the Welfare Committee would focus on addressing members’ welfare concerns, while the Advisory Committee would provide strategic guidance on policy and professional matters. The General Council of Elders, he added, would serve as a repository of institutional memory and offer mentorship and oversight to support the branch’s development.
According to him, the new structures are designed to promote inclusiveness, strengthen institutional stability, and reinforce constitutional governance within the branch.
The inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter for the NBA Garki Branch as members look forward to a tenure focused on professional excellence, unity, welfare, and sustainable growth.
