Brig. Gen. Usman Ahmad Takes Over as Commandant of Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria
Brigadier General Usman Ahmad has assumed office as the new Commandant of the Depot Nigerian Army (DNA), Zaria, succeeding Major General Ahmadu Mohammed in a formal handing-over ceremony held on Tuesday at the institution.
Until his appointment, Brig.-Gen. Ahmad served as Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe State.
The change of command marks a new chapter for the Depot Nigerian Army, the country’s premier military training institution responsible for the basic training of Nigerian Army personnel.
In his farewell address, the outgoing Commandant, Maj.-Gen. Mohammed, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for the opportunity to contribute to the training and development of Nigerian Army personnel during his tenure.
He also commended the commandants of other Nigerian Army institutions within Chindit Cantonment, including the Nigerian Military School and the Army School of Physical Training, for their collaboration and support.
Maj.-Gen. Mohammed further appreciated the dedication, loyalty and professionalism of the institution’s staff officers, instructors and other personnel, whose commitment, he said, contributed significantly to the achievements recorded during his administration.

He urged them to extend the same level of cooperation and commitment to his successor to ensure continued progress and excellence in the institution’s mandate.
In his inaugural remarks, Brig.-Gen. Ahmad thanked the Chief of Army Staff and the Nigerian Army leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the prestigious military training institution.
He pledged to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor by sustaining the high standards of training and producing professionally competent soldiers capable of meeting the Nigerian Army’s evolving operational requirements.
The new commandant also reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the quality of military training to ensure the institution continues to produce battle-ready personnel equipped to confront contemporary security challenges.
The ceremony featured the formal signing of handing-over notes, the transfer of the command flag, decoration of the new Commandant with the Depot Nigerian Army insignia, group photographs, the lowering of the outgoing command flag and the hoisting of the new command flag, symbolising the official transfer of command.
The event was attended by senior military officers, commandants of Nigerian Army institutions within Chindit Cantonment, staff officers and other personnel of the Depot Nigerian Army.
