CGC Adeniyi Reaffirms Customs’ Commitment to Nigerian National Merit Award
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA), describing the institution as a vital platform for recognising excellence and inspiring future generations of Nigerians.
Adeniyi made the pledge on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Acting Secretary of the NNMA, Mercy Musa, and members of the award office’s management team to the Customs Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.
The Customs boss said institutions dedicated to identifying and rewarding outstanding achievements deserve the support of both government and the public, stressing that recognising excellence encourages innovation, hard work and national development.
According to him, the Nigerian National Merit Award plays a crucial role in promoting a culture of excellence by celebrating individuals whose contributions have advanced intellectual and professional development in the country.

“What we are doing is so important because we want the younger generations of Nigerians to know that there is no shortcut to greatness. They have to put in hard work and commitment. When a government agency recognises discoveries, innovations and excellence, it deserves the support of all Nigerians,” Adeniyi said.
He noted that the Nigeria Customs Service had previously supported the Award Office and assured the delegation that the Service would continue to explore lawful avenues to strengthen its partnership with the institution and support its operations.
Earlier, the Acting Secretary of the Nigerian National Merit Award, Mercy Musa, congratulated Adeniyi on the recent extension of his tenure as Comptroller-General of Customs and his election as Chairman of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.
She attributed the milestones to his dedication, professionalism and commitment to public service.
Musa also highlighted the significance of the NNMA, describing it as Nigeria’s highest honour for intellectual and professional excellence. She disclosed that since the award was established in 1979, only 79 Nigerians have been conferred with the prestigious national honour, underscoring its exclusivity and high standards.
