Troops Rescue 5 Family Members, Intensifies Search for Abducted Zamfara LG Chairman
Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have rescued five members of the family of the Executive Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi, following a terrorist attack on his residence in the early hours of Friday.
The chairman, however, remains in captivity as security forces intensify coordinated search and rescue operations to secure his release.
According to the Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, armed terrorists stormed the chairman’s residence on Saturday, overpowering his police and local vigilante security detail before abducting him alongside members of his family.
The military said troops swiftly responded after hearing gunshots and raced to the scene, where they engaged the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gun battle.
The prompt intervention by the troops forced the attackers to abandon five abducted family members, including the chairman’s two children, his wife, mother and another relative, all of whom were successfully rescued. However, the terrorists escaped into nearby bushes with the chairman.

The attack claimed the lives of three members of the chairman’s security detail—two police officers and a local vigilante—who were said to have fought gallantly against the attackers. A civilian was also killed, while the chairman’s elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, sustained injuries during the assault.
In response to the incident, the Theatre Command said it had activated a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and local vigilantes.
The ongoing operation, according to the military, is focused on identified terrorist hideouts with the objective of rescuing the abducted council chairman safely.
The Theatre Command said it had deployed all available operational resources and was maintaining close coordination with participating security agencies to ensure a successful outcome.
It reassured the Zamfara State Government and residents that every lawful and operational measure was being taken to secure the chairman’s release and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
The command also urged members of the public to remain calm, go about their lawful activities and provide credible information through established security channels that could support the ongoing operation.
The military reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, pledging to sustain joint efforts with other security agencies until the abducted chairman is safely reunited with his family and the perpetrators are apprehended.
