Police Rescue 10 Abducted Passengers, Launch Manhunt After Highway Attack in Kano
The Kano State Police Command has rescued 10 passengers abducted by suspected bandits during an attack on a commercial bus along the Jos-Kano Highway in Doguwa Local Government Area, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of three remaining captives.
The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday along the Folgore Forest axis, between Gate Two Safer Highway and Dogo Dutse, when armed assailants attacked a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BKK 6824 XA travelling from Jos to Kano.
According to the Police, the attackers, believed to be five armed bandits wielding machetes and a firearm, blocked the highway, intercepted the vehicle and abducted 13 of the 20 passengers on board.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Doguwa Division was said to have received a distress call shortly after the attack and immediately deployed a team of tactical operatives to the scene.
On arrival, the police engaged the suspects in a gun battle, forcing them to flee and enabling the rescue of nine abducted passengers. Another male victim later escaped from captivity, bringing the total number of rescued victims to 10.
Three victims—comprising one man and two women—remain in captivity.

The rescued passengers were evacuated to Doguwa General Hospital, where they received medical attention. Police said they are in stable condition and responding to treatment.
The Kano State Police Command said it has intensified efforts to rescue the remaining victims through the deployment of additional tactical teams, sustained intelligence gathering and an ongoing manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
The Command described the operation as a demonstration of its commitment to intelligence-led and community-oriented policing in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended residents and motorists for providing timely information that facilitated the swift response to the incident.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and children, and urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious movements and criminal activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.
Police said investigations into the attack are ongoing, adding that further updates will be provided as efforts continue to rescue the remaining captives and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
