Customs Auctions Seized Goods Worth ₦26.53m, Reaffirms Support for Local Industries
The Eastern Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reiterated its commitment to protecting local industries and strengthening Nigeria’s economy following the public auction of seized petroleum and palm oil products with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦26.53 million.
The auction, held at the Command’s Oron Outstation in Akwa Ibom State, featured 14,720 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 14,925 litres of industrial palm oil, edible palm oil and vegetable oil. The exercise was conducted in accordance with Section 119 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Comptroller of the Eastern Marine Command, Deputy Comptroller Esien Esiet, said the auction reflected the Service’s determination to curb smuggling while creating an enabling environment for legitimate businesses to flourish.
He explained that the products were seized during anti-smuggling operations within the Command’s area of responsibility, noting that illicit trade continues to threaten local industries, distort fair market competition and deny the government much-needed revenue.
According to him, the public auction demonstrated the Customs Service’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the effective management of government assets.

He stressed that sustained efforts to combat smuggling are essential to protecting indigenous manufacturers and supporting economic growth, particularly in sectors where local producers require a level playing field to remain competitive and expand their operations.
The Acting Comptroller commended officers and personnel of the Eastern Marine Command for their professionalism and dedication in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime borders despite the operational challenges posed by the difficult terrain.
He assured participants that the auction was conducted in a transparent, fair and legally compliant manner, ensuring equal opportunities for all qualified bidders.
Esiet also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and continued support. He further acknowledged the collaboration of other security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and the media in the fight against smuggling and other trans-border crimes.
He called on stakeholders and members of the public to remain law-abiding and support the Nigeria Customs Service in its efforts to protect the nation’s economic interests, curb smuggling and promote the growth of local industries.
