Media Community Mourns Veteran Journalist, Eagle Online Publisher Dotun Oladipo
Veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo,
has died at the age of 56, throwing Nigeria’s media community into mourning.
Oladipo, who also served as President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), died suddenly on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026, following a reported health emergency.
The veteran journalist was said to have appeared to be in good health earlier in the day and had continued with his normal activities. Close colleagues said he maintained conversations with friends and had reportedly visited a gym with his wife before proceeding with his other engagements.
He also made what became his final social media post only hours before his death.
The incident reportedly occurred later in the evening while Oladipo was on his way to a meeting. He suddenly took ill and, recognising the seriousness of his condition, reached out to his doctor through a bystander.

Despite attempts by people around him to assist and revive him, he reportedly died before receiving medical attention.
Preliminary reports suggest that he may have suffered a heart attack, although an official confirmation of the cause of death was not immediately available.
Oladipo had a long career in journalism, including a stint with The Punch Newspapers, before establishing The Eagle Online, which grew into one of Nigeria’s prominent online news platforms.
His death comes about 18 months after he, his wife and daughter narrowly survived the Otedola Bridge tanker fire in March 2025.
Although the family escaped the incident, Oladipo’s vehicle was destroyed, while his longtime mechanic, Rotimi Olaleye, died in the fire.
The latest tragedy has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s journalism and digital publishing community, with colleagues, members of GOCOP and professional associates mourning the veteran journalist and offering condolences to his family.
Oladipo’s death is a major loss to Nigeria’s evolving online journalism industry, where he was recognised for his contribution to the growth and professionalisation of digital publishing.
