PRNigeria Fellowship: The Opportunity I Never Expected but Needed

Some opportunities are carefully planned for.
You identify them, prepare for them and spend months working towards them. Others arrive unexpectedly, interrupt your routine and quietly redirect your future.
The PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship was one of those unexpected opportunities for me.
When I received the email informing me that I had been selected for the third cohort of the Fellowship, my first reaction was surprise. I had submitted my application without attaching great expectations to it, so seeing the congratulatory message in my inbox felt both exciting and unbelievable.
Almost immediately, another question came to mind.
What exactly does this Fellowship have to offer me?
Like many people, the letters “PR” immediately made me think of Public Relations. While I had some theoretical understanding of the profession, I was unsure how it related to my own career journey.
My academic background is in English Language, not Mass Communication. Although I currently work in broadcasting and plan to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism, Public Relations remained a field I had only observed from a distance.
Naturally, I became curious.
How would this Fellowship fit into my professional aspirations?
What exactly could I learn from it?
The timing made everything even more interesting.
I received the invitation only a few days before the programme was due to begin, leaving little time for preparation. One of my first tasks was simply locating the PRNigeria Ilorin Centre because I was not particularly familiar with the city.
As I studied the Fellowship schedule and reviewed the course outline, my curiosity quickly turned into genuine excitement.
I realised that the programme extended far beyond Public Relations.
The curriculum covered strategic communication, journalism, fact-checking, digital media, artificial intelligence, public speaking, speech writing, social media management and investigative reporting.
It became clear that this was not merely a public relations programme.
It was a comprehensive communication fellowship.
That discovery immediately changed my expectations.
Among all the sessions, I am particularly eager to improve my skills in news writing, reporting and editing. As a broadcaster, these competencies are central to my daily work, and every opportunity to strengthen them ultimately enhances my professional effectiveness.
Equally exciting is the Fellowship’s emphasis on Artificial Intelligence.
Technology is transforming journalism and communication at an extraordinary pace. AI is changing how stories are researched, written, verified and distributed. Rather than viewing these technologies with uncertainty, I believe communication professionals must understand how to use them responsibly and effectively.
Learning how AI can complement journalism without compromising ethics or credibility is one of the aspects of the Fellowship I look forward to exploring.
Another area that has captured my interest is speech writing.

Although I have always enjoyed reading, I never considered myself particularly gifted as a writer. Yet communication is fundamentally about storytelling, whether through broadcasting, public relations or digital media.
Learning how to craft speeches that inform, persuade and inspire is another skill I hope to develop during the programme.
Above all, I came to the Fellowship with one important goal.
I wanted to understand Public Relations beyond the textbook definition.
I wanted to see how communication professionals build relationships, manage reputations, respond to crises and influence public perception in real-life situations.
That practical exposure was exactly what I had been searching for.
Another expectation was the opportunity to interact with experienced professionals already making meaningful contributions to journalism, strategic communication and public relations.
No classroom can fully replace the value of learning directly from practitioners who have faced communication challenges and successfully navigated them.
Perhaps the biggest surprise, however, came after my very first day.
The sessions immediately challenged many of my assumptions about Public Relations.
I began to appreciate that PR is far more strategic than I had imagined.
It is not merely about publicity or media appearances. It is about understanding people, shaping narratives, managing relationships and communicating with purpose.
For the first time, I found myself seriously considering Public Relations as more than an area of interest.
I began to see it as a possible career path.
As someone already working in broadcasting, I now recognise that journalism and public relations are not competing professions. Instead, they complement one another in powerful ways. Both require strong communication skills, ethical judgment, audience understanding and the ability to tell meaningful stories.
Rather than choosing between them, I am beginning to explore how both disciplines can strengthen each other within my own career.
Being selected for this Fellowship therefore means much more than attending another training programme.
It is an opportunity to discover new possibilities, broaden my professional perspective, acquire practical skills and connect with mentors and colleagues who may shape my career for years to come.
Considering that only 30 Fellows were selected from 691 applicants nationwide, I do not take this opportunity for granted.
It is both a privilege and a responsibility.
Looking back, I realise that the opportunities capable of transforming our lives are not always the ones we carefully plan for.
Sometimes, they arrive unexpectedly.
Sometimes, they challenge our assumptions.
Sometimes, they introduce us to possibilities we never imagined for ourselves.
The PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship is becoming one of those defining experiences for me.
And as this journey unfolds, I am excited not only about what I will learn but also about the communication professional I am gradually becoming.
