Nigerian Army Activates 3 New Battalions to Boost Security in Zamfara
The Nigerian Army has operationalised three new Infantry Battalions in Zamfara State as part of efforts to expand operational coverage, enhance rapid response capability and strengthen security across the state.
The newly activated units are the 12 Infantry Battalion, Bakura; 23 Infantry Battalion, Kaura Namoda; and 28 Infantry Battalion, Anka. The battalions are expected to assume responsibility for their respective Areas of Responsibility (AORs) and improve the Army’s capacity to respond swiftly to security threats.
Speaking during the activation ceremonies, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj. Gen. BP Koughna, represented by the Acting Commander, 1 Brigade, Col. Joseph Umaru, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to sustaining operations aimed at protecting law-abiding citizens and restoring lasting peace across Zamfara State.
Umaru said achieving sustainable peace required a coordinated approach involving the military, other security agencies, traditional institutions and members of the public.

He urged residents of Zamfara to support security agencies by providing timely, credible and actionable intelligence that could assist ongoing operations and facilitate early response to security threats.
Addressing the newly deployed troops, the Acting Brigade Commander charged them to maintain discipline, professionalism and operational vigilance while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
He reminded the troops to operate within established Rules of Engagement and uphold the highest standards of conduct in the discharge of their duties.
The Emir of Bakura, Alhaji Bello Sani; Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad; and Emir of Kaura Namoda, Maj. Dr. Sanusi Mohammed Ahmed (rtd), separately commended the Nigerian Army for establishing the additional battalions.
The traditional rulers described the development as a significant step towards improving security and restoring normalcy in communities across the state.
They pledged the support of the traditional institution to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, particularly through community mobilisation, public awareness and information sharing.
The operationalisation of the three battalions is expected to strengthen the Army’s presence across key locations in Zamfara and improve its capacity to respond to security challenges within the affected areas.
