Youth Detention Centre Excels in Essay Competition

Borstal Training Institution, Abeokuta was thrown into frenzy mood when students selected to represent the institution in an essay/art competition, made the management of the institution proud by making it to the podium, an unprecedented feat in a competition keenly contested by selected notable schools.

The competition was organized by The Child Society Actions Project to Combat Child Trafficking and Child Labor in Nigeria and Border Communities in conjunction with Hope Aid Project and Shield the Children Foundation, funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organization for Migration.

The theme of the essay/ arts competition was the ‘‘Effects of child trafficking on Nigeria’’, the competition was divided into two categories; essay and art expression.

The competition which draws over eighty- six (86) entries from selected notable schools from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Federal Capital Territory and Edo State, was held at D-Ivy College, Ota, Ogun-State on Wednesday November 22nd, 2017. The competition was with high hopes and expectation for all participating schools, at the end of the one day competition- the first prize of HP laptop went to Redeemer High School Camp, D-Ivy College won the tablet for second position while the third position notepad went to The Valiant Foundation School.

The art category prize winners are; D-Ivy College, laptop for the first position, Christ the Redeemer won a tablet as coming second while the third position notepad goes to Borstal Training Institution, Abeokuta. Certificate of participation were presented to all the participating students.

The Controller of Prisons and the Principal of the institution A. F. Jemilehin (Mrs) was on ground to receive the boys and uses the opportunity to congratulate and encourage the boys to concentrate and pay more attention to their studies.

She holds that the boys need to be more focused and put-in more effort in their studies in order to achieve their desire dreams, as the day’s success is just a step in the right direction; she also appeals to other students to take a lead from the achievement by projecting themselves into an enviable position for a better and brighter tomorrow.

 The principal admonished the staff not to relent on the effort exerted on the boys as it was obvious in their performance and positive changes noticeable in their behavioral and attitudinal dispositions, hence, she enjoins every member of staff to contribute their quotas towards the positive development of themselves, boys and the institution.
