The Federal Government committee on Decongestion of Prisons led by Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami SAN, has facilitated the release of 18 Convicts on minor offenses with option of fines from Port Harcourt Prison and 4 from Ahoaha Prison.

The Committee under the chairmanship of the Chief Judge of FCT High court, Justice Ishaq Bello was received by the Controller of Prisons Amaliri Ifeanyi, who led the team on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Nyesom Wike CON.

In his speech, Malami stated that the committee was inaugurated on the 31st Oct 2017 with the mandate to decongest the Prisons as it has become a cause for concern to the presidency following the alarming rate of congestion in the Prisons across the country. Thus the committee to come up with a best and sustainable solution to prison Decongestion and not compromising National security.

Governor Nyesom Wike CON, welcomed the special panel and assured that Rivers State has started the Decongestion process by commuting Inmates from Rivers State on death row to life imprisonment, and fines has also been paid, stating that the Chief Judge of Rivers State has also visited the Prison on jail delivery.

However, the Governor blamed the congestion on the 2 years period where courts were closed before his administration, and the Police for not settling minor offenses than taking them to court to be remanded for fear of petitions. He concluded that the committee should carryout their task devoid of political sentiments and he will give every necessary support.

Other committee members also present are the representative of the Controller General of Prisons, ACG Abubakar Garba, Mrs Leticia Ayoola, Secretary of the committee and the Commissioner of Police Ahmed Zaki
Other offices represented are the office of the National security Advicer (ONSA), Civil Society, Human Rights Commission, Rule of Law Advicing Committee, etc.
