Borstal Centre Enrols over 300 Students for Reformative Programmes

Borstal Centre Enrols over 300 Students for Reformative Programmes
The Borstal Training Institution (BTI) in Abeokuta, one of youth centres operated by the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) for reforming seriously delinquent young people has an enrolment of over 300 students.
The Controller of Prisons and officer in charge BTI Abeokuta, Mrs Abimbola F. Jemilehin made the disclosure while receiving a team of Postgraduate students from the Lagos State University (LASU) on a familiarisation tour.
The controller explained the process and procedures of receiving new intakes into the training centre as well as different therapy regimes and counselling session conducted for the students.
She said: “As a special training centre for special youths we have different reformative and rehabilitative programmes that aids the effective reintegration of students back to the society. We also conduct conduct training for correcting anti-social behaviour among the students.”
She also commend the visitors for donating clothing, beverage, soaps and food items items to the centre.
Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the visiting team, Dr. Samuel Oluranti said that the delegation was comprised of masters’ Degree (Msc) and postgraduates (PGD) students of the Social Work Unit of  Department of Sociology, LagosState University (LASU) Ojo.
He said: “I am delighted and impressed with the warm reception and detailed information that we received from the management of the Borstal Institution. Our visit is crucial beyond the theoretical angles our students learn in the university, they now have access to practical dimension on the running of this centre.
“The visitors can now make their own on the spot individual assessments. Our visit to the centre has been revealing, fruitful, fulfilling and will contribute to the students’ knowledge base”.
The team was privileged to visit the academic session where they met with students receiving lectures in preparation for the forth-coming UTME and WAEC examinations. The team also engage the management and the students of the Centre on some grey areas for clarifications.
